OUTLINE

Greetings

Since the establishment of the Hakodate Morning Market No.1 Commercial Cooperative Society (Hakodate Morning Market Donburi Yokocho) in 1956, the early morning vibrancy of the Hakodate Morning Market has continued to attract both locals and tourists alike. Each year, this cooperative continues to evolve in response to the varied needs of the customer and, in 2005, Donburi Yokocho Market reopened after the building was stylishly renewed with a white decor based on the image of the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward. Donburi Yokocho and the cooperative as a whole endeavors to further improve its resources and service spirit to enable the customers to continue enjoying shopping and eating with peace of mind, by providing the freshest ingredients possible.
The 20 or so establishments in Donburi Yokocho have a total seating capacity of 440. One of the market's characteristics is its concentration of relatively small-scale eateries with seating for between 12 and 58, enabling customers to select a place to eat according to their taste, schedule and budget.
Members of the cooperative help to make the market an established tourist spot in Hakodate, by staging a variety of fun activities, including seasonal events each year, and by designating the 4th Tuesday in every month as Donburi Yokocho Day (¥500 sale). Whenever you're in Hakodate, or even nearby, make sure to check out the Hakodate Morning Market Donburi Yokocho. We look forward to seeing you there!

The history of Donburi Yokocho

Hakodate Morning Market began in 1945 as part of the black-market economy that thrived after the end of the war. The market moved to its present location in 1956, where it continues to be a popular haunt of locals as well as being a famous Hakodate tourist spot that attracts countless tourists. One of the main attractions of the market is the bowls of rice (donburi) topped with fresh seafood delicacies, which continue to satisfy the palates and curiosity of all those who visit. In the spring of 2005, Donburi Yokocho was refurbished as the stylish, hygienic gateway to the market. As well as the donburi bowls of topped rice, locally caught fresh squid and seafood dishes are available in abundance. Rows of renowned eateries to choose from, whenever you visit. Hope to see you there soon.
